The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill was approved by Parliament this week.

At present, the apex court has a total of 31 posts, including the Chief Justice (CJI). After the law comes into force, there will be 33 posts excluding CJI.

The bill was introduced to increase the number of posts of judges in view of the increasing number of cases in the apex court. At present, about 60 thousand cases are pending in the Supreme Court.

This decision came at a time when Chief Justice of the country Ranjan Gogoi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court.

On 11 July, the Law Ministry, in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that 59,331 cases were pending in the apex court.

The Chief Justice had said that due to an insufficient number of judges, the Constitution Bench was not constituted as per the requirement for a decision on important matters.
