Rajya Sabha approves NID amendment bill

New Delhi, Aug 6, The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday approved a bill providing for the status of institutions of national importance to the National Design Institutes (NIDs) of Amravati, Bhopal, Jorhat and Kurukshetra.

The Upper House passed the National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill 2019 containing this provision after a brief discussion. Replying to the discussion, Industry and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that the status of these institutions will be improved by the status of national importance.

He said that courses will be designed according to practical requirements. With this, the government will insist that teachers should remain in these institutions for a long time for quality education.

The original law of 2014 will be amended through this bill.

The reasons and objectives of the Bill stated that NIDs of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Haryana should be accorded the status of an institution of national importance.

Design education will be socially more inclusive with the National Design Institutions getting the status of institutes of national importance. The Bill provides that in place of Senior Designer, the post of Principal Designer shall be treated as that of Professor.
